Fablok WLS40 is a series of broad-gauge diesel locomotives, the first copies of which were produced in 1950 at the Technical Office of the Locomotive Factory in Chrzanów. The production of this type of locomotive was carried out in the years 1951-1975 at the Fablok Chrzanów and ZNTK Poznań plants. The service weight of a single locomotive was 7 tons, and its length with buffers - 4.38 m, with a width of 1.44 m and a height of 2.2 meters. The design speed of this locomotive was approx. 17 km / h.
Fablok WLS40 was developed on the basis of the German 1DK locomotive produced in Chrzanów, and from the very beginning it was assumed to be used on broad-gauge railway lines. Compared to its predecessor, the first production series had a different drive unit (S64L diesel engine with a maximum power of 44 HP) and a significantly changed "body". It is worth adding that in 1957 the engine was changed to a more economical and more powerful one. WLS40 railways are used primarily in heavy industry, but also in forestry and sugar industry. They were used by the Polish State Railways to a marginal extent. As a curiosity, it can be noted that approx. 10 locomotives of this type were exported to North Korea.
